Soft Tissue and Esthetic Considerations in Implant Therapy Slipcase Edition

Soft Tissue and Esthetic Considerations in Implant Therapy Slipcase Edition
Author: Anthony G. Sclar ID: 0867153547

Hardcover: 288 pagesPublisher: Quintessence Pub Co; Slipcase edition (December 1, 2003)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0867153547ISBN-13: 978-0867153545 Product Dimensions: 1.2 x 9.2 x 12.2 inches Shipping Weight: 4.4 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #990,514 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #352 in Books > Textbooks > Medicine & Health Sciences > Dentistry > General #909 in Books > Medical Books > Dentistry

My initial review indicated that this text is outdated in some regards. An oral surgeon contacted me about my initial review and asked me several questions about my opinion on the text. This conversation made me second guess my original thoughts so I spent time and reviewed the text. Following this read, I sheepishly admit that Dr. Sclar’s textbook actually a fairly good resource to look at as an introduction to soft tissue management. My original comment about being outdated stemmed from my recent experience at periodontal meetings and multi-disciplinary specialty meetings where other techniques are being taught, but in fact, most of these techniques (not all, but most) are actually discussed in Dr. Sclar’s text.

My apologies to those who read my initial review that was not positive regarding this book. After further review I think it is fairly insightful and a good resource for initial information. My only negative comment is that some of the flap designs that are proposed, especially for papilla regeneration or formation, are difficult to achieve. rom a clinical standpoint, in my experience, the papilla preserving techniques around multiple implants have not been very successful — likely because expecting survival of small flaps with narrow sources of blood supply and with sutures through them is not predictable. Innovative thinking, for sure, but difficult to achieve.

Dr. Sclar has always been a very renowned researcher in this field with countless publications an lectures. This book summarizes in a very well organized fashion everything there is to know about dental implants and the integration of soft tissue esthetics. This book will help every practitioner to elevate their implant case from a mere functional result to great esthetic result.

This is a great book describing implant soft tissue manipulation and regeneration. I am a general dentist and I place and restore implants. Soft tissue regeneration and manipulation is the key to success in modern implant dentistry and this book has some very good techniques. I wish there was more!

HardcoverPublisher: Benjamin Cummings; Tenth edition (2011)ISBN-10: 0132499118ISBN-13: 978-0132499118 Product Dimensions: 11 x 8.7 x 1.2 inches Shipping Weight: 3.5 pounds Best Sellers Rank: #57,677 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #176 in Books > Science & Math > Biological Sciences > Anatomy
This book gives a great overview of human anatomy and physiology for people who do not need it as a detailed course. It provides informative photographs, description over complicated topics, and questions that you can answer at the end of a section to be sure you are understanding the reading. In addition, there are multiple sections in each chapter that are titled "Homeostatic Imbalance." These sections explain different illnesses that affect the homeostasis (the body’s ability to maintain relatively stable internal conditions even though the outside world in continuously changing – page 12) of the body. Every few chapters, there is a page that focuses on a career that corresponds to the specific system that is covered in that chapter. For example, Chapter 13, which covers the Respiratory System, the career that is discussed is the job of a respiratory therapist. It is very helpful to be able to read through these, since it gives you a better idea to what that career entails. There is also a section called "A Closer Look," which discusses a specific illness of that system more thoroughly than it does in the actual text, different ways of scanning the body with CAT Scans, MRI’s, etc. and much more. In Chapter 13, the illness that is explained is asthma. There is also a section at the end of each chapter that explains the how that specific system develops as the baby is growing. I have found that very interesting, since I have learned lots of new things about when specific systems form as the baby grows. For my course, we did not have to answer the review questions or do the critical thinking and clinical application questions, since we have a different tests we take that go over the chapter, so I do not know how much time it would take to answer them, etc.

Plague

Plague: One Scientist’s Intrepid Search for the Truth About Human Retroviruses and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autism, and Other Diseases Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Kent Heckenlively ID: B00QXKR63K

On July 22, 2009, a special meeting was held with 24 leading scientists at the National Institutes of Health to discuss early findings that a newly discovered retrovirus was linked to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), prostate cancer, lymphoma, and eventually neurodevelopmental disorders in children. When Dr. Judy Mikovits finished her presentation the room was silent for a moment, then one of the scientists said, “Oh my God!” The resulting investigation would be like no other in science. For Dr. Mikovits, a 20-year veteran of the National Cancer Institute, this was the midpoint of a five-year journey that would start with the founding of the Whittemore-Peterson Institute for Neuro-Immune Disease at the University of Nevada, Reno, and end with her as a witness for the federal government against her former employer, Harvey Whittemore, for illegal campaign contributions to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. On this journey, Dr. Mikovits would face the scientific prejudices against CFS, wander into the minefield that is autism, and through it all struggle to maintain her faith in God and the profession to which she had dedicated her life. This is a story for anybody interested in the peril and promise of science at the very highest levels in our country.

A Book Review of "Plague" by Kent Heckenlively and Judy Mikovits

By Russell Dobkins

This is a "Great Book"! I have read many "Great Books", including "Our Stolen Future" by Dr. Theo Colburn, "Silent Spring" by Rachael Carson, "Pandora’s Poison" by Joe Thornton, "Radioactive Heaven and Earth" by IPPNW, "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" by Dr. Weston Price, "The China Study"by Campbell, "Not On The Label" by Lawrence, "Harvest of Empire" by Juan Gonzalez, "Hypothyroidism, The Unsuspected Illness" by Dr. Broda Barnes, "The Death of Money" by James Rickards. "Plague", by Judy Mikovits, PHD and Kent Heckenlively, fits in this list of important books. They all shed light on what is going on. I studied Chemistry and Biology in College. All the things I have studied, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Toxicology, Immunology, Neurobiology, Organic Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Neurobiology, Pharmacology, Human Health and Nutrition, Genetics, Developmental Biology, Infectious Diseases, and Virology, have put me in a position to really appreciate the work Judy Mikovits has done. That she could write it, after all the horrible, illegal, dishonest, and so very stressful things that people in power, did to her, just because she was honest about revealing the truth of what she was finding, is astounding!

The Foreward; "A Disease Able to Affect the Economies of Nations", by Hillary Johnson, says it well. Dr. Mikovits found, using rigorous scientific method, first class and up to date, state of the art, laboratory techniques, a new man-made virus.
"Plague" is in my opinion the most important book ever published on the neuro-immune disease ME/CFS, an extremely debilitating, chronic disease that usually catapults its victims from all professional and social contexts for the rest of their lives and which is euphemistically called "chronic fatigue syndrome" and denigrated and often confused with chronic fatigue or burnout. (ME / CFS = Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – ICD-10 G93.3)
This book does not only concern ME / CFS sufferers, but actually the whole of mankind, even those people who are still healthy. The book does not only concern this unfortunate patient group which is neglected by medical science and health care systems and which is discriminated against as malingerers for decades. For many other diseases such as autism, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer etc. the co-author Judy Mikovits has found evidence of infection with man-made gamma retroviruses (distant relative of HIV) – and most frightening is that she (and others) also found it in about 6% of the (yet) healthy US population.
Paul Cheney, one of the doctors who witnessed an epidemic outbreak of ME/CFS in the mid-1980s at Lake Tahoe in Nevada/USA, once said to me: "At best, this is the worst epidemic mankind has ever faced, and in the worst case, this is the end of humanity". An absolute doomsday scenario – more than 6% of the population is probably infected with a transmissible retrovirus that causes, just like his big brother HIV, an acquired immune deficiency that consequently results in a number diseases, the incidence of which has already reached epidemic proportions. Non-HIV-AIDS – that’s how Mikovits called the disease ME/CFS, might be only the tip of an iceberg of unimaginable dimension.

Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations and Techniques 6th Edition

Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations and Techniques (Therapeudic Exercise: Foundations and Techniques) 6th Edition
Author: Carolyn Kisner PT MS ID: 080362574X

Series: Therapeudic Exercise: Foundations and TechniquesHardcover: 960 pagesPublisher: F.A. Davis Company; 6 edition (October 2, 2012)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 080362574XISBN-13: 978-0803625747 Product Dimensions: 8.8 x 1.5 x 11.2 inches Shipping Weight: 4.9 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #18,874 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #12 in Books > Textbooks > Medicine & health Sciences > allied health Services > Physical Therapy #16 in Books > medical books > Allied Health Professions > Physical Therapy #30 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Exercise & Fitness > Injuries & Rehabilitation

I like two things about this book. The first is that it is very thorough and complete. Exercises, both stretching and strengthening, are included for basically every major muscle group or extremity motion. Furthermore, the book is divided up well enough that you can find what you’re looking for fast.

Secondly, I like the fact that this book is evidence-based, meaning that it backs up what it suggests with references from the scientific literature. In fact, it’s so good that it can be a great place to start a literature search from.

Know too that this book is mainly written for people who have some medical background of sorts, so if you’re just an average reader looking for some workout exercises, this probably isn’t your book. Rather, I feel like the book is better suited for athletic trainers, personal trainiers, occupational therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, massage therapists, and so on. Practitioners looking for more info on the shoulder might also want to check out Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for more detailed ex’s on rotator cuff tear prevention and rehabilitation.

The information in this textbook is great, but I feel like it’s scattered willy-nilly around the book. I pretty much utilize the index as my table of context. I find this text frustrating to use, and more time consuming than some of the information is worth. I don’t know what this new edition accomplished but it wasn’t organization or making it reader friendly!

This is a really hard book to get through. The material is NOT difficult, but this book seems to present in the most difficult way possible. The chapters are not well organized, the language is not easy to get through, and there are better texts on the subject.
